Unique Health Issues of Women

Women’s health issues are unique because being a woman predisposes a woman to certain health conditions that are unique to women. Even a natural process like menopause can predispose women to certain health conditions – such as heart disease, osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancer – which if not addressed in time can lead to severe complications.

In addition to this natural process, women have certain health issues during their entire reproductive life cycle. The health conditions that affect their reproductive organs include uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain and irregular menses. In addition, there are some other health issues that affect both men and women, but differently as far as women are concerned.

The health issues that men have can affect women as well, but differently. For Instance:

  • Women are more likely to show signs of anxiety and depression more often than men.
  • Women suffer from a heart attack equally, as men do, but with their signs and symptoms differ and are more likely to die following a heart attack
  • The risk associated with sexually transmitted diseases is high in women
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can often become more serious in women when compared to men – especially chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections.
  • Women are more likely to suffer from Osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and Osteoarthritis.
  • Women are at increased risk of urinary tract infections and the complications associated with UTIs in women are often serious.

Early detection and diagnosis can help prevent these conditions in women. Meet your gynaecologist to understand: your risk, the factors that increase your risk and the preventive measures you can take to minimize your risk.

The Next Challenge for Women…

According to a Report (ICMR Report 2020) released by “ICMR” India Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Ovarian Cancer Incidences are rising in India. The next appalling situation is the late detection of these cancers – which is attributed to high mortality rates.

According to the same report – Metropolitan cities – such as Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad have the highest burden of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is leading cancer in India in women followed by cervical and ovarian cancers.

“One woman dies from breast cancer for every two newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer in India. One woman dies from cervical cancer every eight minutes in India. Furthermore, ovarian cancer remains the third leading cause of deaths in India.” ICMR 2020

Women Beware! Advanced Stage Cancer Detection is Rampantly Prevalent in India

All major gynaecological cancers are being detected late in India – for the following reasons:

Breast, ovarian and cervical cancers are being detected in the 3rd and 4th stages due to lack of awareness, asymptomatic nature of cancer in the initial stages, the most challenging nature of ovarian cancer, the reluctance of Indian women to undergo screening and health check-ups.

Regular health checks and screening help detect all major health issues of women including breast and cervical cancers in the initial stages for effective cure. Even simple tests such as PAP smear helps detect cervical cancer in the early stage for effective treatment.
